Sonitor Technologies Seeks Inter Partes Review of CenTrak’s Ultrasound Positioning Patent

Asserts CenTrak’s methods in patent for ultrasound-based positioning were known and obvious

 Stamford, CT (March 6, 2018) Sonitor Technologies, the global leader in indoor, ultrasound-based positioning technologies, today has filed a petition for Inter Partes Review (IPR) with the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) seeking review of claims 1-35 of CenTrak’s United States Patent No. 9,622,030. 

“Sonitor introduced its first ultrasound-based RTLS system in 2006 and has been innovating in this space since 1997. Our growing patent portfolio and products are unique. We're filing this IPR as a proactive measure to make sure that the market recognizes our freedom to operate in it,” said Sonitor Technologies, Inc. President and CEO Anne Bugge. “We will face competitors in whatever forum or with whatever legal strategies that are required.” 

The challenged claims recite the use of known synchronization techniques in infrared and ultrasonic real-time location systems. However, both infrared and ultrasonic real-time locations systems were known prior to the ’030 patent. Radio frequency synchronization techniques were also well-known and in use before the ’030 patent. Many of the ’030 claims are merely the application of Wi-Fi synchronization methods to a real-time location system. Sonitor asserts in its IPR that all claims of CenTrak’s patent are unpatentable over the prior art. 

In August 2017, Sonitor won an earlier patent dispute with CenTrak when the U.S. District Court in Delaware ruled that CenTrak’s U.S. Patent No. 8,604,909 is invalid. CenTrak is appealing that ruling. CenTrak’s ’030 patent, which has been challenged in the newly filed IPR, arose out of the same family as the ‘909 patent involved in the Delaware litigation.

RTLS (Real Time Location System) Leader Sonitor® Announces Major Leap in RTLS Badge Design

Kansas City, MO (October 9, 2017) - Sonitor, the global leader in indoor positioning technologies, announced today at the Cerner Health Conference 2017 that it has launched an RTLS badge specifically designed for healthcare staff. SmartBadge, the size and shape of a typical staff I.D. badge, is built on the same state-of-the-art technology as Sonitor's existing SmartTag™ platform. The form factor of the SmartBadge constitutes a major advance in technology designed for staff assist, staff safety and workflow applications by combining wearability and ease-of-use with industry-leading ultrasound-based accuracy and reliability.  

Sonitor's development of the new badge began, in part, via collaboration with Sonitor client Sanford Health, a leading adopter and innovator of RTLS technology in healthcare. Sanford's suggestions for the new design ranged from the aesthetic-making it smaller, less bulky and easier to wear for employees-to the practical, including a simpler way to change the badge's batteries. 

Sonitor's engineers also incorporated customer feedback to design several enhanced features for the SmartBadge following the style of the ubiquitous, unobtrusive I.D. badge as a model. For instance, the buttons are recessed in order to prevent accidental alarms. Sonitor's SmartBadge has distinct advantages over other I.D.-like solutions. For example, RF-based solutions that are worn close to the body can experience interference as the human body can act as a strong insulator. Sonitor® Technologies Wins Patent Dispute With CenTrak

Stamford, CT (August 30, 2017) Sonitor Technologies, a global leader in indoor, ultrasound-based positioning technologies today announced that it has won its patent dispute with CenTrak. In a decision dated August 30, 2017, the United States District Court in Delaware ruled that Sonitor does not infringe CenTrak's U.S. Patent No. 8,604,909, and that CenTrak's patent is invalid.

CenTrak had sued Sonitor in February 2014, accusing the Sonitor Senseâ„¢ products of infringement of that patent. The court first found that there was no evidence to support a finding of infringement by Sonitor. The court also held that Sonitor had demonstrated that all claims of CenTrak's patent are invalid because the patent does not disclose an ultrasonic real-time location system (RTLS), noting that ultrasound is "fundamentally different" than the CenTrak infrared technology disclosed in the patent.
