What is an Indoor Positioning System (IPS)?

Indoor positioning systems can be simply described as GPS on steroids but used indoors for the purpose of locating and directing people and things. Using smart mobile devices, active asset tags or wearables, beacons transmit location data to smartphones, tags or wearables. The beacons report the device location data which is then accessed in a variety of ways including via cloud-based application program interfaces (API), mobile apps, integrated CRM software, etc. IPS technologies include ultrasound, radio frequency (RF), Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth low energy (BLE). Most IPS providers use a combination of technologies based on the degree of granularity of the location data required for the application. Ultrasound delivers the highest level of granularity from room to bay, bed and chair level accuracy and reliability.
